Have you noticed how little the word ‘apparel’ for women is used today? Once upon a time not-long-ago, this was the only way women’s clothing was referred to. If you ever went into a Department store and asked where the women’s clothes were from a saleslady, her head would have gone back and she would have looked down her nose and sort-of huffed at you that “the women’s apparel was over there, Madam!” and gestured with a very well manicured hand of red painted nails in the direction that she wished you would hurry up and move to. By that stage if you were a bit of a shrinking violet, you would most likely have been far too embarrassed to try any item of clothing on.
But, now-a-days, if you could even catch the eye of someone in a department store who you could ask directions from, if you asked for the “women’s apparel” they would translate in a loud voice that “the women’s clothes are over there in aisle 3F” and you would still probably feel daunted if you were a bit of a shrinking violet. So, we women of a discerning nature spend the first 20 minutes in any department store wandering around, peering over the top of towering movable stacks of racks looking for the sign hanging from the ceiling saying “Women”.
